Free Character Counter Online

Count characters precisely with full Unicode support — emojis, accents, and special characters are correctly counted as single characters. Perfect for fitting your message into Twitter, SMS, or meta descriptions.

What’s the difference between characters and bytes?

A character is one visible unit (a letter, emoji, or symbol). A byte is the storage unit. In UTF-8, basic Latin letters take 1 byte, accented letters typically 2 bytes, and emojis 4 bytes. SMS networks count bytes, Twitter counts characters.

Common character limits

  • Twitter / X: 280 characters per post
  • SMS: 160 characters before splitting into multiple messages
  • SEO title tag: ~60 characters before truncation in Google
  • SEO meta description: ~160 characters
  • LinkedIn post: 3000 characters
