IBAN Validator
Paste or type any IBAN to validate it instantly. The tool checks three things: whether the country code is recognized, whether the total length matches the country’s standard, and whether the MOD-97 checksum is correct.
What is an IBAN?
An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is a standardized format for identifying bank accounts across borders. It was introduced by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Banking Standards (ECBS) to simplify cross-border payments.
IBAN structure
- 2-letter country code — e.g. GB (United Kingdom), DE (Germany), FR (France).
- 2 check digits — used for the MOD-97 validation algorithm.
- BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number) — the country-specific account number, up to 30 characters.
How MOD-97 validation works
The IBAN is rearranged (first 4 characters moved to the end), letters are converted to numbers (A=10, B=11 … Z=35), and the result is divided by 97. A valid IBAN gives a remainder of 1.
IBAN vs SWIFT/BIC
The IBAN identifies the account; the SWIFT/BIC code identifies the bank. Both are needed for most international wire transfers.
