Data Storage Converter

Convert between decimal (SI) storage units — KB, MB, GB, TB, PB — and their binary (IEC) equivalents — KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB. Edit any field and all others update automatically.

Decimal (SI) vs Binary (IEC)

  • Decimal: 1 KB = 1 000 bytes, 1 MB = 1 000 000 bytes. Used by storage manufacturers and network speeds.
  • Binary (IEC): 1 KiB = 1 024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1 048 576 bytes. Used by operating systems to report RAM and file sizes.

Why the difference matters

A hard drive advertised as “1 TB” stores 1 000 000 000 000 bytes. Your OS reports it as ~931 GiB. The gap widens at larger sizes — a 1 PB drive appears as ~888 TiB on the OS.

Quick reference

  • 1 B = 8 bits
  • 1 KB = 1 000 B  |  1 KiB = 1 024 B
  • 1 MB = 1 000 KB  |  1 MiB = 1 024 KiB
  • 1 GB = 1 000 MB  |  1 GiB = 1 024 MiB
  • 1 TB = 1 000 GB  |  1 TiB = 1 024 GiB
