Letter Frequency Counter — See Which Characters Dominate Your Text

Paste any text and instantly see the frequency distribution of its characters — sorted from most to least frequent, with counts, percentages and visual bars. Perfect for linguistics, cryptography puzzles, writing analysis, or simply satisfying curiosity.

Features

  • Sortable table: entries automatically ordered by frequency (descending)
  • Counts + percentages: exact occurrences and share of total
  • Visual bars: the relative magnitude is shown next to each entry
  • Case-sensitive toggle: treat A and a as the same or different characters
  • Digit toggle: include or exclude 0-9
  • Symbol toggle: include punctuation and other non-letter symbols
  • Space toggle: count spaces, tabs and newlines as their own entries
  • Unicode aware: letters with diacritics (é, ñ, ü, etc.), Greek and Cyrillic letters are detected

How it works

The tool walks through your text one character at a time, asks “is this a letter, digit, space or symbol?”, and increments the count for each character it should keep based on your toggles. The output is sorted by count (highest first), with ties broken alphabetically.

Use cases

  • Cryptography exercises: classic substitution ciphers leak via letter frequency (E, T, A, O are most common in English)
  • Writing style analysis: compare your text’s distribution to standard English/French/etc.
  • Linguistics homework: quick phoneme/grapheme statistics
  • Detecting unusual content: a code-heavy or numeric document shows obvious skew
  • Curiosity: which letter wins in your novel draft?
