Text to Slug Converter — Turn Any Text Into a Clean URL Slug
Convert article titles, product names, or any string into a clean, URL-safe slug. Accents are normalized (é → e), special characters are dropped, spaces become dashes (or underscores), and the result is ready to use as a URL path, a CSS class, a filename, or any identifier. Everything runs in your browser.
What it handles
- Accents and diacritics: é, è, à, ñ, ü, ç, š, č — all normalized to ASCII (e, n, u, c, s, c)
- Special Latin letters: ß → ss, æ → ae, œ → oe, ø → o, ł → l, þ → th
- Punctuation and symbols: !, ?, &, %, $, @, etc. — all replaced by the separator
- Whitespace: spaces, tabs, newlines — collapsed to a single separator
- Leading/trailing separators: trimmed automatically
- Consecutive separators: collapsed so you never get “–” or “__”
Options
- Separator: dash (-) — the SEO standard for URLs; or underscore (_) — common for filenames
- Case: lowercase (default, best for URLs) or preserved (keep capitalization)
- Max length: truncate to N characters with clean cutoff (no half-words at the end)
- Stopword removal: drops common short English words for shorter slugs
Why slugs matter for SEO
Search engines read URLs. A page at /the-complete-guide-to-baking-bread ranks better than one at /?p=1234. Clean slugs also look trustworthy in social shares and email previews. Keep them short, lowercase, dash-separated, and descriptive.
Common uses
- WordPress, Ghost, Hugo post slugs from titles
- E-commerce product URLs
- File and folder names without spaces or special chars
- CSS class names from descriptive labels
- API resource identifiers
- Custom anchor IDs for in-page links
