Add Line Numbers — Number Any Multi-line Text Instantly
Paste any text and get it back with a number prepended to each line. Choose the starting number, step, separator, and padding style. Skip empty lines or number them too. The numbering happens live as you type, and your text never leaves your browser.
Options
- Start at: any number you want — 1, 0, 100, even negative if you need countdown lists
- Step: 1, 2, 5, 10… handy for “every 5th line” listings
- Separator: 7 styles — dot (1.), paren (1)), colon (1:), pipe (1 |), dash (1 -), tab, or double space
- Padding: none, space-padded (alignment), or zero-padded (01, 02, 10)
- Skip empty lines: blank lines stay blank, numbering continues on the next non-empty line
Why padding matters
For lists longer than 9 items, space-padding aligns numbers nicely (1, 2, …, 9, 10 stack cleanly). Zero-padding (01, 02, …, 10) is useful when you’ll sort the output later — it ensures alphabetical order matches numeric order.
Common uses
- Numbering source code lines for documentation or bug reports
- Creating ordered lists from raw text
- Preparing line-numbered references for legal or academic citations
- Generating step-by-step tutorials
- Numbering survey answers, items, ingredients
