Base64 Encoder and Decoder
Encode any text into Base64 or decode Base64 strings back to text. Full UTF-8 and emoji support.`
Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Encode any text into Base64 format or decode Base64 back to readable text. Supports full Unicode including emojis, accented characters, and non-Latin scripts (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, etc.).
What is Base64?
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data using 64 ASCII characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /, plus = for padding). It’s used to safely transmit binary data over text-only protocols like email or HTTP headers.
Common use cases
- Data URIs: embedding images directly in HTML/CSS (
data:image/png;base64,...) - Email attachments: MIME encodes attachments in Base64
- Authentication: HTTP Basic Auth uses Base64 (NB: Base64 is encoding, not encryption — never use it to “secure” passwords)
- API tokens: JWTs use Base64URL encoding for their payload
- Storing binary in JSON: embed images, files, or other binary blobs
Base64 vs Base64URL
Standard Base64 uses + and /. The URL-safe variant (Base64URL, used in JWT) replaces them with - and _ to avoid issues in URLs. This tool decodes both variants.
Important: encoding vs encryption
Base64 is not encryption. It’s trivially reversible. Anyone can decode a Base64 string. Don’t use it to “hide” passwords or sensitive data — use proper encryption instead.
