MD5 Hash Generator
MD5 (Message-Digest Algorithm 5) is a widely-used cryptographic hash function that produces a 128-bit (16-byte) hash value, typically rendered as a 32-character hexadecimal number. Created in 1991, it remains common for non-security applications like file integrity checks and database indexing.
What is MD5 used for?
- File integrity: verify that a downloaded file matches the original
- Database keys: create unique IDs from arbitrary content
- Caching: generate cache keys from request parameters
- Deduplication: identify duplicate files by their hash
- Legacy systems: compatibility with older APIs and protocols
⚠️ Important security notice
MD5 is cryptographically broken and should NOT be used for password storage, digital signatures, SSL certificates, or any security-sensitive purpose. Researchers have demonstrated practical collision attacks since 2004. For security, use SHA-256 or SHA-3, and for passwords use bcrypt or Argon2.
Properties of MD5
- Deterministic: the same input always produces the same hash
- Fast: can hash gigabytes of data per second
- Fixed length: always 32 hex characters regardless of input size
- One-way: impossible to derive input from hash (in theory)
