SHA-256 Hash Generator
Generate secure SHA-256 hashes from any text. 256-bit cryptographic fingerprint, the standard for modern security applications.
SHA-256 Hash Generator
SHA-256 (Secure Hash Algorithm 256-bit) is a cryptographic hash function from the SHA-2 family, designed by the NSA. It produces a unique 256-bit (64 hexadecimal characters) fingerprint for any input. Unlike MD5 or SHA-1, SHA-256 has no known practical attacks and is considered cryptographically secure for most modern uses.
Why SHA-256 matters
- Bitcoin & blockchain: SHA-256 secures Bitcoin’s proof-of-work and transaction integrity
- SSL/TLS certificates: modern HTTPS certificates use SHA-256 signatures
- File verification: Linux distributions publish SHA-256 sums for ISO downloads
- Code signing: macOS and Windows use SHA-256 for executable signatures
- Git commits: Git is migrating from SHA-1 to SHA-256 for object identifiers
SHA-256 vs other hash functions
- MD5 (128 bits) — broken, only for non-security uses
- SHA-1 (160 bits) — deprecated, collisions found in 2017
- SHA-256 (256 bits) — secure, widely supported ✅
- SHA-384 (384 bits) — same security as SHA-256, longer output
- SHA-512 (512 bits) — faster on 64-bit systems, longer output
How this tool works
This tool runs entirely in your browser using the native Web Crypto API, which is implemented at the browser level and provides hardware-accelerated, cryptographically secure hashing. Your text never leaves your device.
